verstehen1 asked: I wanted to second an earlier ask about Tomb Raider. I was really hesitant about playing the game, despite being a long-time TR fan, because so much of the advertising focused on images of sexualization of assault/violence against women. A friend finally convinced me to play the game despite the advertising and I loved it. I was really glad to see that caring and determined Laura continue in the first issue (not that expected anything less).
Yeah, listen, I will make no apologies for railing against how badly the early PR for this game was, it was RIDICULOUS and gamers were rightly turned off. It was a slap in the face to Lara Croft fans.
It was the reason I turned down the offer to write the comic at first. I just couldn’t believe what the PR guy was saying, it just infuriated me.
But then I played the game and it’s just this simple, the PR guy got EVERYTHING WRONG. It is so NOT about ‘protecting’ Lara, and all that nonsense. The game is certainly the most human adventure role playing game I have ever experienced. I felt like cheering at some points, and even as a big fan of classic Lara, I could not believe the integrity with which they presented her in this version…she’s smart, capable, tough, and full of human need and emotion. Never perfect, always awesome.
The bad PR came almost exclusively from one source and one interview, I am told. That person just tripped on their own feet, I feel. I am sure they meant well, and I kind of get what he was trying to say…because you DO care so much about Lara in the game that it hurts when something bad happens to her. But he just said it in the worst possible way, I feel.
But to me, it’s kind of like hating a bag of chips because the cover design is ugly. The game is what counts and the game is AMAZING.
I’m just a fan, I admit it.
